The 13th edition of the NACOBA Sports Gala was held on Wednesday March 8th 2023 with games starting at 9:00am and ending at 6:00pm. As an improvement to previous galas and in the spirit of fairness, the football tournament was divided into 2 tournaments; The Bapya Cup and the Kawulu Cup. With only 16 teams registering to play football. Each tournament had 2 groups of 4 teams, group games ended at 4:00pm. The top two teams from each group ascended to the semi-finals and consequent winners to the finals. By 5:00pm both Trophies had their winners, The Tyrants for Bapya Cup and Kyayitiridde for the Kawulu Cup.
Other sports and games played were basketball. Volleyball, table tennis, scrabble, chess, tug of war, 100m sprints and sack race. Most of these were played concurrently with football, the races after. I did not register any complaint about the games, their format, time management neither the games management at all.
Table tennis was conducted in the Berlin hall common room on a round robbin format. This gave the participants a good number of games and sufficient opportunity to amass points. The equipment was supplied by the Uganda Table Tennis Association. It was the last game to be concluded and participants kept at the venue throughout their games.
Tug of war turned out to be the second most watched game and participated in with 8 teams participating. It ended within time too.
The award ceremony started immediately at 7:00pm with the Headmaster Namilyango College as our Chief Guest and the P.T.A Chairman. The ceremony went on smoothly with The TYRANTS emerging overall winners for a second time running, congratulations to them.
Entertainment for the day was by IVUGA band that played late into the night as celebrations continued. Noteworthy this time was the fact that many cohorts made tremendous effort to decorate and service their tents and create vibe for themselves. Lounges, bars, display screens, mood lighting, turf, DJ booths and Old Disc Turntables featured prominently. A pool table also gave revellers a chance to refresh their skills. We plan to feature pool in the next Gala too. Lets do this again next year.
